Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Tooth pain isn't always caused by a cavity, but may be a sign that you need a root canal. Our Wahiawa, HI, dentist, Dr. Mildred Arucan-root canalMasunaga, explains common signs that may indicate the need for root canal therapy.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy eliminates an inflammation or infection in the pulp of your tooth. The soft pulp is encased by the harder dentin and enamel layers and is composed of tissue, blood vessels and nerves. During root canal therapy, the pulp is removed. The procedure is called "root canal" therapy because it involves cleaning and shaping the thin canals that extend from the top of your tooth deep into your roots. After your tooth is filled with gutta percha or another filling material, a crown is usually placed over the tooth to strengthen it. Local anesthetic ensures that you'll feel no pain during the therapy.

How can I tell if I need a root canal?

It's a good idea to make an appoint with our Wahiawa office if you experience any of these signs and symptoms:

  • Constant or Intermittent Pain: Severe pain can be a sign that you need a root canal, but you may also notice only mild or occasional pain, particularly in the early stages of an infection or inflammation. Warning signs include pain that occurs when pressure is placed on your tooth or worsens after you eat or drink hot or cold beverages or food. Pain, whether it's caused by a cavity, inflammation, infection, gum disease or other issues, should always be identified and treated promptly.
  • Color Change: Teeth that need root canals may become darker. Although it's not unusual for all of your teeth to become a little duller over the years, it's a problem if only one tooth starts to look darker.
  • Swollen Gums: Are your gums swollen or tender? The problem may be caused by an inflammation or infection deep inside your tooth.
  • Fever: A bacterial infection in your tooth can cause a fever, severe pain and swollen lymph nodes around your jaw or neck. You may also notice that you have a pimple or collection of pus around your tooth. If you notice any of these signs, call our office immediately. In addition to a root canal, you'll also need antibiotic treatment.

Root canals protect and preserve teeth affected by inflammation or infection. If you're concerned about a tooth, schedule an appointment with Wahiawa, HI, dentist, Dr. Arucan-Masunaga, by calling (808) 622-0001.
